Honoring the Past, Empowering the Future: Why Women Sports USA Was Born

Updated: 16 hours ago

Women’s sports have come a long way—but for too long, the pioneers who paved the way were overlooked, their stories left untold.

That reality hit me hard when I came across a Facebook post highlighting the frustrations of women athletes from my time—trailblazers who played with passion, grit, and pride, but were often overlooked in the public eye.

Women athletes have been breaking barriers for decades. From organizing unofficial teams and fighting for field time to demanding fair treatment long before Title IX was fully enforced, their determination built the foundation for the opportunities young women have today. These were women who competed without scholarships, recognition, or even proper uniforms—driven purely by their love of sport and a belief that they belonged.

Yet, their stories have often been forgotten. Their sacrifices were overlooked. Their legacies are under-celebrated.

Women Sports USA was created to change that.

I realized that if we don't document and celebrate these pioneers, we risk losing an essential part of our history. Women Sports USA was born from a deep desire to empower athletes—past, present, and future—to claim their place in the story of American sports.

I'm not doing this alone. I’m proud to say that I have a powerful team behind me: athletes, coaches, and Hall of Fame inductees who share my passion for this mission just as profoundly as I do.

Together, we are working to spotlight stories that deserve to be told, celebrate achievements across generations, and inspire the next wave of women athletes to dream even bigger.

Today, our mission is simple but powerful:

  • Spotlight athletes who blazed trails before the world was watching

  • Celebrate today’s rising stars

  • Inspire the next generation of women to chase their dreams

This platform is more than just a website—it’s a movement. It’s about ensuring that across all 50 states, every woman who picked up a ball, a stick, a racket, or laced up her shoes to compete has her story heard and honored.

Thanks to the tireless efforts of so many, we’re seeing young women athletes today finally receiving the visibility and respect they deserve. But there’s still more work to be done. There are still barriers to break, voices to amplify, and victories to celebrate.

If our efforts empower even just a handful of women, it’s a win. If it sparks conversations, shifts perceptions, or inspires a young girl to chase her dreams, it’s a victory beyond measure.

Reviewing this distortion with you of Women’s Sports (WRAMS) at URI was one of the best moments of my athletic life. Then the kindred spirit we share brought us to a new level. Thank you for your tenacity.
