Let's give a huge applause to Carol Spaziano, a Rhode Island trailblazer! Carol's story is one of passion, persistence, and heart. Imagine a young girl dreaming of playing softball and basketball, only to find there were no teams for girls! But Carol didn't let that stop her.

Fast-forward to high school in 1970, and Carol finally got her chance! She played basketball (with a men's-sized ball and a "rover"!), softball, and volleyball, all while wearing jumpers, not shorts! Her determination shone brightly. At Rhode Island College, she continued her basketball journey as a point guard, finally getting to wear shorts!

But Carol's impact didn't stop on the court. After graduating, she discovered her middle school had no girls' sports. Instead of accepting the status quo, she petitioned the school committee and boom! 1978, girls' basketball and softball teams were born, with Carol paving the way.

She coached passionately, even as the rules and equipment evolved—from big basketballs to three-pointers and from big softballs to fast-pitch! Carol witnessed the incredible progress of women's sports and played a vital role in making it happen for her local school.

A letter from a player

“Coach Carol Spaziano was one of the very first basketball coaches in middle school. I learned the basics of basketball (bouncing, passing, triple threat, layup, etc). I learned respect, camaraderie, and how to have fun. She gave young female athletes the courage and confidence to learn how to stand tall on their own. At that time, I had no idea what an important lesson it would be or the impact that athletics would have in my life through high school, college, and my adult life and career. People often call me Coach these days, and I honor that immensely. Thank you, Coach Spaz!"

It's a testament to Carol's ability to teach skills, respect, camaraderie, and confidence. Her legacy lives on in every athlete she has coached and inspired.

Carol, your dedication and spirit have made a world of difference. You've shown us that with passion and determination, anything is possible. Thank you for being a true champion of women's sports!
